Please read all the information below BEFORE you register so you know exactly what to expect once the season begins !

We're sure you have some questions about the 2018 season, so below you will find lots of information about the club, the season and how to get your child involved. Wakatipu Rugby Club has been going since 1953 and we have senior and junior teams playing. We’re always very happy to welcome new players to the club and to let you know it’s never too late to get involved!

It’s a great activity for your child and a rewarding one for parents too – watching your child’s team develop and seeing them move through the age groups and grow stronger as a unit and as individuals. You’re generally with the same team every season of rugby so it’s an excellent opportunity to catch up and cheer them on

It is very important to register your child before they play as they will then be covered by the NZRU insurance scheme. Registration is not complete until subs are paid.

How old?

Players can start as young as 5, and until the year they turn 8 they will be playing Rippa Rugby. Rippa Rugby is a very safe, non-contact, easy to play game for both boys and girls alike. While the rules are simple and the game easy to learn, Rippa Rugby will promote excellent ball handling and running skills, and give all kids a chance to participate in our national game.

Once your child is in the under 8’s, they would normally be in a tackle team, but playing a smaller field with less players. As your child progresses the players and the field size increase. Your child can play throughout their schooling as we have a high school team and a senior team as well. We also have a female team in high school.

Who coaches?

All our coaches are volunteers but have been registered with the New Zealand Rugby Union and have also undertaken a coaching course. We are actively seeking coaches so please get in contact if you can assist this season.

How much?

This year subs are $150 per player. There is also an option on the registration form to be a club volunteer, i.e. Club Fundraising. If choose to assist the club in this area, your subs will be $100. This includes your team photo and a team uniform that can be used for the season. Own boots must be provided, and shorts and socks for the under 8's upwards. We also provide mouthguards and heavily subsidies  fitted mouthguards for the older children.

What does it involve and when does it start? Will there be travel?

In general we play for all of term 2, on a Saturday. Games are throughout Central Otago district (i.e Alexandra, Clyde, Wanaka) and there is a practice once a week at Lakes Leisure on a Thursday, from 4pm. 2018 Start date TBC

How can I be involved ?

We need Rippa coaches this year as well as some assistant coaches for various grades so we would love your help, and your players  love sideline support, clean uniforms, hot chocolate on cold days and lots of cheering. We also need 2 parents to help manage the uniforms again this year. We provide all coaches with training and priority ticketing for NZRU Games, co-coaching welcome. Please contact me direct to sign up.

How do I find out about the draw and what happens in bad weather?

Once the draw is finalised, it will appear on the web page Central Otago Junior Rugby, this is also where you will find weather updates, information about cancellation of games, maps of all the rugby grounds in the district and details of the Rugby clubs in the competition.

What happens next?

If you’re interested, please register and pay for your child using the form below.

Once your child has registered we will be in touch to let you know your child’s team, coach, and where their games and practices are every week. This will take a few weeks to organise but we will stay in touch.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact the club via our email, we’re always happy to help.
